Secondary pupils visited the library as part of an endorsement of the joys of reading.
Pupils's visited Hendon library; the site of pioneer librarian Eileen Colwell, a librarian at Hendon library for over 40 years; from 1929 onwards.
In the 1920's there were no children's sections in libraries, and the presence of children in libraries was discouraged. Eileen Colwell felt it was of vital importance that children should have access to books from an early age, and that their introduction to literature should be a pleasant encounter. She founded a children's section at Hendon library and influenced the provision of literature for children profoundly in the UK.
