Year 5 - Making Parachutes!

This week, our Year 5 students have conducted their very own parachute investigation! In particular, they've been investigating air resistance and the effect that different parachute sizes have on the time taken to drop to the ground. This experiment expanded our students' scientific vocabulary, introducing them to concepts of acceleration, resistance and force. In addition, the experiment was the perfect way to corroborate scientific facts with some great crafting!

Year 2 - Herb Lesson!

This week, our 2 students learned all about the different types of herbs such as mint, basil, parsley and more! Not only did our students have the chance to explore each herb's smell and texture, but they also created an origin chart for each one!

Nasheed Assembly Feedback by Dr Alan Shaw!

Both BHA Nasheed Assemblies were a huge success, thanks to the support of our guests, staff and of course, the hard work of our pupils! Here's what Dr Alan Shaw, one of our guest visitors, had to say about it:

"I was most impressed with the wonderful behaviour and excellent singing of your pupils. Their love for their school and pride in their faith was clearly evident. The 'finale' with the whole school around all sides of the hall was extremely powerful. You must be really proud of all of your pupils and I must commend your staff for working with the children to achieve such a high standard."

How to go #FizzFree at School!

Fizz Free Feb is over, but it’s a pleasure to look back and celebrate some of the hard work that went on all over the country. SugarSmart had a chat with Barnet Hill Academy to find out what we've been up to.

The pupils at BHA are no strangers to talking about sugar and health. Our school is a fizz-free zone, and teachers have even used giant models of a mouth and toothbrush to teach children about dentists and oral health.

This year, the school took the plunge and ran a Fizz Free February event for their Nursery and Reception classes. Through discussion, sharing a poster, and providing examples of different drinks, the teacher got the kids thinking about fizzy drinks and health.

Shahnaz Vayani, Early Years Manager at Barnet Hill Academy, said: “The children had some awareness about fizzy drinks and health already, and they took the conversation really well.”

The parents were informed about the activity and shown pictures via an online platform, where they shared stories about how their children had responded at home, and expressed their thanks to the school.

One parent said: “It’s such a good thing for the kids to learn. Our kid has been announcing that fizzy drinks are not allowed in the house!”

Teachers also took the opportunity of Fizz Free Feb to get their knowledge up to scratch: they all did a quiz to learn about the health impacts of sugar.

If you want to be sugar smart like the pupils at Barnet Hill Academy, why not take the pledge?
